CHAPTER EIGHT

Robin walked to Bradoch’s bakery in the morning for fresh bread and rolls.

Bradoch’s smile welcomed her in. ‘You’re early this morning, Robin. You’ve just missed Etta.’

‘I think it’s the bright summer weather. I want make the most of it.’

Bradoch bagged her bread and rolls. ‘I hear you were swimming at the cove.’

‘I was. I’m tempted to have a repeat performance today, but trying to talk sense into myself. I’ve work to do.’

‘If your work can wait, you should head for the shore. I know I would.’

‘I may just do that.’

‘Do you know that Oliver is away on business to London?’

‘Yes, he stopped by the crafting bee at Etta’s cottage last night. I didn’t get a chance to talk to him.’

Bradoch didn’t push the conversation any further. ‘Is there something else I can get for you?’

Robin eyed the cakes on display. ‘I’ll have one of your summer fruit and cream scones.’

Bradoch bagged the scone that was filled with fresh fruit including raspberries and brambles, and whipped cream.

Robin paid for her items, smiled at Bradoch and left as other customers came into the bakery.

Stepping outside into the morning sunlight, she glanced over at Oliver’s art shop. Seeing it closed, her heart ached a little, but then she shrugged the feeling aside and walked back to her cottage to get on with her day.

The loch shone like smooth glass in the sunshine, and the scent of flowers perfumed the air. Her garden was looking lovely, she thought, and it made her decide to stay where she was, at the cottage, working and enjoying being out in her garden.

She popped the fruit and cream scone in the fridge, and cut two thick slices of fresh bread to make tasty buttered toast for her breakfast.

While the kettle boiled for tea, she checked her website for any online orders and was pleasantly surprised that she’d had several sales of substantial pieces of her textile art — like full paintings, original pieces that sold quite well. A trip to the post office would be needed, so after breakfast she packaged the orders up and took them along for posting.

She’d promoted these new pieces on her website as suitable for summer, with bright coloured floral designs, and summery turquoise blues, sunshine yellow and vibrant pinks.

On the way back, her phone rang. She paused at the edge of the loch to take the call from the knitwear company she modelled for.

‘We’re promoting our summer range in a fashion feature, and we’d like you to model several new pieces for us, Robin,’ the management woman told her. ‘Would you be available in a few days time? We’re arranging a suitable location. You’ve been there before during the last photo shoot for the spring collection of jumpers and cardigans. The windswept coast north of where you are.’

‘I know where you mean,’ Robin confirmed.

‘I’ll email the details of the schedule. You have the right look for the new knitwear promotion. The usual fee applies, if that’s okay with you, Robin.’

‘Yes,’ Robin agreed.
